What's in a Name 4: Information and Sign-Up

Welcome to the fourth What's in a Name Challenge! This challenge was originated by a young blogger named Annie, who hosted it for two years. When she decided to give up on being the host, I took over the challenge.

I credit this challenge with being one of the prime reasons for my becoming a blogger, so I am thrilled to be its new host.

Here's How It Works

Between January 1 and December 31, 2011, read one book in each of the following categories:
  1. A book with a number in the title: First to Die, Seven Up, Thirteen Reasons Why
  2. A book with jewelry or a gem in the title: Diamond Ruby, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Opal Deception
  3. A book with a size in the title: Wide Sargasso Sea, Small Wars, Little Bee
  4. A book with travel or movement in the title: Dead Witch Walking, Crawling with Zombies, Time Traveler's Wife
  5. A book with evil in the title: Bad Marie, Fallen, Wicked Lovely
  6. A book with a life stage in the title: No Country for Old Men, Brideshead Revisited, Bog Child
The book titles are just suggestions, you can read whatever book you want to fit the category.

Other Things to Know

  • Books may be any form (audio, print, e-book).
  • Books may overlap other challenges.
  • Books may not overlap categories; you need a different book for each category.
  • Creativity for matching the categories is not only allowed but encouraged.
  • You do not have to make a list of books before hand.
  • You do not have to read through the categories in any particular order.
On January 1, I'll publish 7 posts, each with a Mr. Linky (one for each category and one for your wrap-up post), on this blog so you'll have a place post links to your reviews (bloggers) or leave comments (non-bloggers) as you finish up each category.

To join in, sign up with Mr. Linky below. If you aren't a blogger, just add a comment. If Mr. Linky ever disappears, either try again later or click on "Email Me" in the side bar and send me your information, and I'll add the link myself.

EDIT: To use Mr. Linky: put your name or your blog's name in the top box and the URL (web address) of your blog in the bottom box. If you don't have a blog, just mention your intent to join the challenge in the comments.

EDIT: It's never too late to join!

I hope you like the categories! Have fun and good luck.

I'm really excited about this challenge! It's one of the few I'm signing up for this year!

Jen Forbus said...

Oops. I signed up too fast and didn't notice it said please leave a comment. I'm really psyched. I haven't participated in this challenge before and I usually don't sign up for challenges. But this one really piqued my interest.

Lynne Perednia said...

I haven't done a challenge before, either. But the creativity involved in choosing books looks like great fun.

Plus, I'm certain to add to the TBR mountains based on what others read.

dog eared copy said...

LOL, I really had to think about this one for a little bit! I had just been twittering about how I wasn't going to do challenges next year, instead just focus on clearing my TBR stacks and TBL queues! But in looking over my stacks, I've discovered that I have titles that fit every category (in both audio and print) for the above categories, so it looks like I can kill at least two birds with one challenge! I'm in! Now to decide which format to go with :-)

AlleluiaLu said...

As I said in my post, I think there is plenty of room for choices in these categories. I'm excited to get started!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for hosting!

What a clever idea for a challenge! This is going to be fun.

Teresa said...

This sounds really fun. Thanks for putting it together.

Hi BethF,

Thanks for hosting yet another great idea.

Challenges are something that I keep ignoring, as they seem so artificial.

However, this one sounds very relaxed, achievable and most of all, great fun.

Looking forward to the January start-line.

Yvonne

This is the only challenge I'm doing, other than my own. I'm so excited about it that I've already gone through my list of review copies, unsolicited books, and wins, and come up with at least one option for each.

1. Number - 13, Rue Therese
2. Jewel - Diamond Ruby
3. Size - Emily of Deep Valley, or, Let the Great World Spin
4. Travel - Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight
5. Life Stage - You Know When the Men are Gone

Julie said...

This is my very first challenge. I need to go through my books and see what I have that would qualify. Looking forward to it.

Grilsgood said...

I love this kind of challnge it reminds me of a car rally where we had to go off and find things and the first one back with all fo them won.

Jen - devourer of books said...

Oops! I forgot to note my evil books: Either "Heresy" or "After the Fall"

Nise' said...

Yay! I'm in will get my a post up soon.

This is going to be my first challenge too!!! Novice question, what do you put in the URL for Mr. Linky, when I put in my email address it does not work.
Thanks

Beth F said...

Elisabeth: I added information about Mr. Linky to the post. If you don't have a blog, that's okay, you can join just by leaving a comment.

Found out about this at Teresa's Reading Corner and it sounds like fun!! Is DEATH a "lefe stage"? :)

Beth F said...

Lori, you could probably make a case for it as life stage or as evil word. Have fun creatively meeting the categories.

CMash said...

Thank you for hosting!! Looking forward to this Challenge!!

dollycas aka Lori said...

Stupid me clicked on the enter button twice when I was copying for making the post for my blog. Please delete one of the Dollycas's Thoughts. Guess I really am excited about this challenge. :)

In my previous post it should say "life stage". Is anyone else having one of those days?

Thanks for popping by my blog to say "Hi!" I do indeed like the categories for this year and have spent the morning rearranging my stacks and updating my listening queues! So far, the easiest category to find titles for as been the numbers category (I have at least nine on hand) and; the most difficult category to find titles for has been the gem/jewelry category (I have only one on hand!) I'm only sorry I wasn't clued in on the current challenge! I'm finding tons of stuff that would have qualified!

Yvonne said...

I didn't complete it the last two years, but I'm going to give it another try!

Looking forward to taking part in the next installment of this challenge!

Okie dokie, so I've signed up! Now I've just got to find books that fit each category... Looking forward to the challenge. :)

Joe Wallace said...

Am I allowed to take on this challenge if I'm the author of Diamond Ruby? (Not titled that way just to double-up on the gem category, I swear!) I think it's a great idea, and I look forward to some adventurous reading...and to finding out what everybody else here chose too. Thanks--Joe

Beth F said...

Gerbera Daisy: they can be any genre you want and written for any audience (kids or adults).

Joe: Of course you should join up. Everyone is welcome. Your Diamond Ruby was the inspiration for the jewelry / gem category.

Hello, we are new to all this, but would like to take part. Questions: 1. Is it ok for the kids to participate? 2. Do we have to state on Jan. 1st which books we are reading? Many thanks!

Beth F said...

Elizabeth: you do not need to make a list beforehand -- it can be fun to see which books you read during the year will work for the challenge.

Anyone of any age can join in the challenge -- the more the merrier.

Elizabeth (My Reading World) said...

Thanks Beth for getting back to me. The kids (Hazel & Kieran) and I will all be doing the challenge.

Jessica Peter said...

I just joined! I'm giving myself two constraints for this challenge:

1) Books must be novels or novel-like (e.g., memoirs) - for me, "One Yard Wonders: 101 Sewing Fabric Projects" will not count for numbers,

2) If the number (etc) is only in the subtitle, it won't count - for me, "Kiss me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love" also will not count as a number.

:)

It's never too late to join up!
