I credit this challenge with being one of the prime reasons for my becoming a blogger, so I am thrilled to be its new host.
Here's How It Works
Between January 1 and December 31, 2011, read one book in each of the following categories:
- A book with a number in the title: First to Die, Seven Up, Thirteen Reasons Why
- A book with jewelry or a gem in the title: Diamond Ruby, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Opal Deception
- A book with a size in the title: Wide Sargasso Sea, Small Wars, Little Bee
- A book with travel or movement in the title: Dead Witch Walking, Crawling with Zombies, Time Traveler's Wife
- A book with evil in the title: Bad Marie, Fallen, Wicked Lovely
- A book with a life stage in the title: No Country for Old Men, Brideshead Revisited, Bog Child
Other Things to Know
- Books may be any form (audio, print, e-book).
- Books may overlap other challenges.
- Books may not overlap categories; you need a different book for each category.
- Creativity for matching the categories is not only allowed but encouraged.
- You do not have to make a list of books before hand.
- You do not have to read through the categories in any particular order.
To join in, sign up with Mr. Linky below. If you aren't a blogger, just add a comment. If Mr. Linky ever disappears, either try again later or click on "Email Me" in the side bar and send me your information, and I'll add the link myself.
EDIT: To use Mr. Linky: put your name or your blog's name in the top box and the URL (web address) of your blog in the bottom box. If you don't have a blog, just mention your intent to join the challenge in the comments.
EDIT: It's never too late to join!
I hope you like the categories! Have fun and good luck.

I'm really excited about this challenge! It's one of the few I'm signing up for this year!
Oops. I signed up too fast and didn't notice it said please leave a comment. I'm really psyched. I haven't participated in this challenge before and I usually don't sign up for challenges. But this one really piqued my interest.
I haven't done a challenge before, either. But the creativity involved in choosing books looks like great fun.
Plus, I'm certain to add to the TBR mountains based on what others read.
LOL, I really had to think about this one for a little bit! I had just been twittering about how I wasn't going to do challenges next year, instead just focus on clearing my TBR stacks and TBL queues! But in looking over my stacks, I've discovered that I have titles that fit every category (in both audio and print) for the above categories, so it looks like I can kill at least two birds with one challenge! I'm in! Now to decide which format to go with :-)
As I said in my post, I think there is plenty of room for choices in these categories. I'm excited to get started!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for hosting!
What a clever idea for a challenge! This is going to be fun.
This sounds really fun. Thanks for putting it together.
Hi BethF,
Thanks for hosting yet another great idea.
Challenges are something that I keep ignoring, as they seem so artificial.
However, this one sounds very relaxed, achievable and most of all, great fun.
Looking forward to the January start-line.
Yvonne
This is the only challenge I'm doing, other than my own. I'm so excited about it that I've already gone through my list of review copies, unsolicited books, and wins, and come up with at least one option for each.
1. Number - 13, Rue Therese
2. Jewel - Diamond Ruby
3. Size - Emily of Deep Valley, or, Let the Great World Spin
4. Travel - Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight
5. Life Stage - You Know When the Men are Gone
This is my very first challenge. I need to go through my books and see what I have that would qualify. Looking forward to it.
I love this kind of challnge it reminds me of a car rally where we had to go off and find things and the first one back with all fo them won.
Oops! I forgot to note my evil books: Either "Heresy" or "After the Fall"
Yay! I'm in will get my a post up soon.
This is going to be my first challenge too!!! Novice question, what do you put in the URL for Mr. Linky, when I put in my email address it does not work.
Thanks
Elisabeth: I added information about Mr. Linky to the post. If you don't have a blog, that's okay, you can join just by leaving a comment.
I love Challenges, and this looks totally fun, thank you!

Found out about this at Teresa's Reading Corner and it sounds like fun!! Is DEATH a "lefe stage"? :)
Lori, you could probably make a case for it as life stage or as evil word. Have fun creatively meeting the categories.
Thank you for hosting!! Looking forward to this Challenge!!
Stupid me clicked on the enter button twice when I was copying for making the post for my blog. Please delete one of the Dollycas's Thoughts. Guess I really am excited about this challenge. :)
In my previous post it should say "life stage". Is anyone else having one of those days?
One of my favourite challenges in 2010 so looking forward to this one.
Great categories.
I love this challenge so I'm well enthused by round 4.
This looks fun! I need to do some poking around but will be posting my list this weekend!
Just loved this challenge the moment I read about it at Jen Forbus' Blog! I'm in!
Thanks for popping by my blog to say "Hi!" I do indeed like the categories for this year and have spent the morning rearranging my stacks and updating my listening queues! So far, the easiest category to find titles for as been the numbers category (I have at least nine on hand) and; the most difficult category to find titles for has been the gem/jewelry category (I have only one on hand!) I'm only sorry I wasn't clued in on the current challenge! I'm finding tons of stuff that would have qualified!
I didn't complete it the last two years, but I'm going to give it another try!
Looking forward to taking part in the next installment of this challenge!
This looks fun, I have never entered a reading challenge before.
Another challenge to start my year with. I must learn to say no. LOL I will do a post about it soon.
Sounds like fun! Count me in :)
I can't wait for this challenge. I haven't done any challenges in the past. So I am looking forward to the new year to start on a few challenges.
I can't resist these things, especially when they sound this good. Got my link in. Ready to start reading on January 1!
I would like to sign up for your book challenge for the coming year. I don't have a blog.
Thanks very much for allowing me to participate. I have never joined one of these before, but it sounds fun .
Now.... to figure out where I want to get started,or get some ideas for books in each category .
Looks like another fun year. Thanks for the challenge.
I'm looking forward to this!
This looks like fun! I am excited to join this challenge!
Hooray! My favorite challenge is back...Thanks for hosting it again. I love the new categories--great ones for being creative with.
*smiles*
I am so excited about this!!! (Like I neeeded a reason to add to my Nook!!) I can't wait to meet everyone!!!
So, now I am following your blog and twitter!! :)
I've decided this is my ONE challenge for the year!! I will have a post with my choices up later today and add it to Mr. Linky. Looking forward to this...thanks.
Passed this one up last year and regretted it, so I'm looking forward to this year's challenge. Thanks so much for hosting again!
Quick question...can they be either fiction or non fiction?
Okie dokie, so I've signed up! Now I've just got to find books that fit each category... Looking forward to the challenge. :)
Am I allowed to take on this challenge if I'm the author of Diamond Ruby? (Not titled that way just to double-up on the gem category, I swear!) I think it's a great idea, and I look forward to some adventurous reading...and to finding out what everybody else here chose too. Thanks--Joe
Gerbera Daisy: they can be any genre you want and written for any audience (kids or adults).
Joe: Of course you should join up. Everyone is welcome. Your Diamond Ruby was the inspiration for the jewelry / gem category.
YAY! A new What's in a Name challenge! Thanks for hosting again, Beth. :)
It might seem as if I fell out of #3 but I haven't: I did finish reading my books but I can't seem to post my reviews... :(
Ok, seriously.... this is the LAST challenge I'm signing up for!!! I couldn't resist this one... it looks like fun!
I already see three books in my TBR list that will fit the categories. This will get me to make time to read them.
This is my first year for this challenge and I'm excited about it!!
Thanks for hosting!
I love choosing books for this! But I still need to read 2 books to finish 2010s challenge...
I'm so thrilled, this is the 1st reading challenge I officially join EVER! Thanks for hosting it! Emma @ Words ans Peace
Sign me up. Looks like fum!
Oops, I didn't mean to sign up twice (the second one has link to my post abt the challenge)
This looks like so much fun! Thanks for organizing it.
This challenge sounds like a lot of fun and I want to be a part of it!!! Soooooo, sign me up!!!
As a novelist, I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see so many people enthusiastic about books in this busy, noisy world...and willing to share their enthusiasm. I'm really grateful--and I know all writers would be.
This one looks like fun! I'll definitely be giving it a try. :-)
I'm going to have fun filling in some of those categories as creatively as possible!
I am really excited about this challenge. Please count me in.
Looking forward to the challenge and thanks for hosting! Just posted my choices.
I'm looking forward to this challenge. www.mywallabygold.blogspot.com
Looking forward to this fun challenge!
Looking forward to starting on this challenge! Thanks for hosting it ;]
I am hoping to have much more success with this challenge than with 2010's. I have a plan this year!
Sooo okay I did not finish #3 (yet!)and I'm not sure if I will, but I signed up for this one. I decided to cut back on challenges, but this one I really could not resist. Thanks Beth for hosting it :)
Looking forward to the book challenge! I've never done one, and so far I'm signed up for two next year!
Thanks for hosting this challenge, Beth! I'm looking forward to it.
What a fun challenge. I'm in.
I thought I commented but I guess not. I'm in on this one. What a great challenge. I can't wait to get started. I already have books in my TBR pile that fit the bill.
I just couldn't resist this challenge and am really looking forward to it.
Tho I failed last year, I'm still going to do this interesting challenge :) ...hope I'll make it this year
This is a great idea! I'm new to reading challenges, but really like the sound of this one :)
Hi!! I just read about this challenge on another blog, who was commenting about doing no more reading challenges...ha ha.
I like how diverse this one is, and I look forward to reading the books and others reviews.
This is my first challenge. It's nice to find one that will fit in with the constraints I've set myself in my blog. I'm looking forward to going through my collection to find forgotten books that fulfil the challenge categories
I joined this year but didn't finish but I'm really determined to complete it in 2011.
I would love to join this chellenge. Name: Lauriew
thanks!
Looking forward to starting this in the new year even if I always promise myself no more challenges.
I've signed for 2011 too! Looking forward to start reading =)
This is my first time with this challenge. I loved picking my selections based on the themes. Can't wait!
I am so excited to be joining this challenge. It clears more books off of my shelves. Yea.
This is interesting! I'll try to work on it. Thanks for giving us more spirit to read!
Hello, we are new to all this, but would like to take part. Questions: 1. Is it ok for the kids to participate? 2. Do we have to state on Jan. 1st which books we are reading? Many thanks!
Elizabeth: you do not need to make a list beforehand -- it can be fun to see which books you read during the year will work for the challenge.
Anyone of any age can join in the challenge -- the more the merrier.
Thanks Beth for getting back to me. The kids (Hazel & Kieran) and I will all be doing the challenge.
i'm in and wooww...i think this's my first reading challange, i have to find those category books and i'm ready ^.^
i'm in, and wooww...i think it's my first reading challange, i have to find those category books, i'm ready...but what if i can't make it?? ;)
I hope it's not too late to join... I'm in!
It's pretty much never too late to join in the fun.
Loved this challenge last year, hope I love as much this year.
Just found this challenge from Booking Mama! I've never done a book challenge before, but am really looking forward to trying this one out. I'm hoping to get some of the gals from our book club to join too!
One of my favorites :)
I am joining this year as well!
I'm so excited for this again this year!! Thanks Beth!!
look forward to completing this challenge, good luck everyone.
I didn't do very well with the challenge this year, but I'm still going to give it a try again for 2011!
I'm in! Sounds like fun. This is my first year to do challenges...just learning about them. No blog to speak of as of yet. Still working on that. Can't wait to start coming up with titles!
I wasn't going to sign up with any more challenges (this sounds familiar), but I saw this one and couldn't help myself! It's like a double challenge, a challenging challenge, I love the idea of it.
Thanks for hosting it!
I'm excited about this challenge...part of the fun of it, is figuring out what books fit into each of those categories. Thanks for another great year!
Hello Beth! This is my first year trying your fun reading challenge and I look forward to it. Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed this challenge last year, thanks for hosting!
This challenge is going to be lots of fun!
Beth--will the word 'windy' be acceptable for movement, and would 'life' be acceptable for life-stage?
Awesome, this challenge looks like so much fun :)

P.S. I'm a new follower, would luv it if you'd follow back ;)
I LOVE this challenge and can't wait to get started!!
Looking forward to my first challenge...which I plan to complete with books only from my own bookshelf!
This will be my first year doing this challenge!
I always like this challenge - it makes me think about titles and gets me to read books sooner.
Elizabeth, I'm pretty easygoing -- they are definitely a stretch, but go for it if you can't find anything else during the year.
Looking forward to seeing what others are reading and joining in.
This is my first book challenge. I hope that this is not too much of a challenge for me but up I am up for it.
I was looking for a book challenge and I saw Karla @ Rambling Roads post about this one. I'm looking forward to participating in my first book challenge. Thanks for hosting!
Looking forward to this reading challenge!!
Glad to find this year's challenge today, and even happier to find I've already read a book for a category. :D
I don't have a blog, but I'm looking forward to doing this challenge, since it seems like more fun than some of the other ones I've seen.
Great fun! Thanks for hosting. I'm in!
Planning to participate....sounds intriguing. Will need to do some research to find books I'd like to read...
What fun! Thanks for hosting this challenge.
Just joined this is my first time doing the challenge and I look forward to it.
I'm in! I loved What's in a Name 3, so I thought I'd try it again. I have most of my books selected. Thanks for hosting.
Thanks for hosting this challenge.
I am in !
Looking forward to reading this you :)
I love the treasure hunt aspect of finding books for this challenge ... plus it doesn't require too many books so I'm happy to be doing this one again.
Hi Beth!
I am really glad that you'll host the challenge again! It was fun last year and I am really looking forward to it this year!
I am German, so maybe not all of my chosen books will be in English. But I hope this is okay!
Cara
Great idea, I wanna participate, if i'm not to late to join in. :)
I love a good book challenge! Thanks for hosting this one!
Already hunting books... :)
I just joined! I'm giving myself two constraints for this challenge:
1) Books must be novels or novel-like (e.g., memoirs) - for me, "One Yard Wonders: 101 Sewing Fabric Projects" will not count for numbers,
2) If the number (etc) is only in the subtitle, it won't count - for me, "Kiss me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love" also will not count as a number.
:)
It's never too late to join up!
I'm a new blogger. And this challenge is truly interesting. I will try to blog my first book on February. Hope I can pass the challenge. I'm hunting the books.
I signed up ☺
Seeing it's never too late... I'm game!
Really looking forward to this challenge! Will now have to go stalk some books and see which ones I decide on.
Good luck to everyone btw. :D
I've actually done 2 books for #4 as of right now.... Flashes From Another World -- Vanished --
Still looking for one in each of the other 5 categories ☺
This is my first book challenge, but it sounds like a lot of fun.
I've heard about this challenge for a while and am excited to try it out!

I just joined and found that I've read books that have met all these categories :o) YAY! Good luck. This was fun and I may try to meet them again knowing the categories now. Thanks!!
